Many new couples don’t know if they can have sex during pregnancy or when to start having sex after pregnancy. They are afraid that while doing intercourse which involves penetration might harm the baby or trigger labor. However, the truth is that doing sex during pregnancy is safe, that is if you’re having a normal pregnancy. There are few recommendations from doctor as in which positions to have sex in order to prevent any uncomfortable to your body.
Sex during pregnancy
Having sex during pregnancy is completely safe and won’t harm your baby. However, it is advisable to avoid doing any intercourse during the final stage of your pregnancy because there is a hormone in semen which is called prostaglandin that might stimulate contractions. Other than that, making love with your partner is harmless to your baby because your baby is protected by the amniotic sac which has strong muscles in your uterus. Thus, it will help to prevent any infection that would harm your baby. Plus, during intercourse the penis doesn’t go beyond the vagina which means that it won’t reach the baby. However, it is best to discuss with your midwives or doctor to know whether or not you can have sex during pregnancy.
Sex after pregnancy
After giving birth to your baby, you will be wondering when is the safest time to have sex again. There are different rules according to each culture. In general, you can start having sex roughly 4 weeks after giving birth. Because during the first two weeks after giving birth, there is still a bleeding in your vagina. It takes longer time to continue to have sex if had undergone episiotomy or C-section. This is because you just had a cut on your abdomen and uterus during C-section and on your perineum to enlarge your vaginal opening. Thus it takes time for it to heal completely so that to prevent the cuts from reopening if you were to have sex and usually it takes about six weeks to heal.
In Malay culture, the best confinement period is 100 days. During those 100 days, you are not allowed to have sex with your partner, while in the first 40 days your food intake is strictly controlled means there is food that you can and cannot eat. However, these days Malay mommies only take 44 days of confinement period.
Nevertheless, there are some women who don’t have any sexual desire even after confinement period. This is likely a normal situation as women who have just given birth to their baby will feel that they are not as attractive as before. Thus making them less desire in having sexual contact with their partner. Plus you are more concerned about your baby who needs a 24/7 care which already makes you feel tired and exhausted, and so you become less interest in having a sex.
It is important to discuss with your partner in order to understand your condition. If you were to have sex during pregnancy, make experiment on what position is the best and let your partner know if you feel uncomfortable with it. Partner will understand as to not wanting to have sex after giving birth after they saw how much you have suffered in the labor room. Some of them might feel guilty. Hence, both of you should communicate with each other and discuss on this matter.
